El nombre Ouanaminthe proviene de Juana Méndez, esclava negra, esposa de Pablo Báez (quien fue alcalde de Azua de Compostela) y madre de Buenaventura Báez, el primer presidente mulato de la República Dominicana . Ouanaminthe limita con la vecina ciudad de Dajabón, ubicada en el territorio de la República Dominicana . Las dos ciudades están separadas por la masacre del río .
